While the Tour de France may be the most well known and overall most challenging cycling race in the world, it is not the longest. That claim belongs to the appropriately titled, Trans-Siberian Extreme. As the name of the race suggests, the Trans-Siberian Extreme cycling race urges cyclists to ride across the entirety of the largest country in the world, in approximately three weeks, no less.

The Trans-Siberian Extreme begins in the Russian capital of Moscow and concludes in Vladivostok, near the North Koran border and the Pacific Ocean. The race crosses eight time zones and five climate zones and has a total ascent of about 8,000 meters. In total, cyclists have 25 days to ride nearly 5,700 miles, for an average of more than 220 miles per day. By comparison, the Tour de France is typically about 2,080 miles in length and is held shortly after the 2,220 mile Giro D’Italia. These races combined add up to about two-thirds of the Trans-Siberian Extreme. In fact, one of the Trans-Siberian Extreme’s 15 stages is nearly 870 miles in length.
